Phytochemical constituent and antimicrobial properties of guava extracts of east Hararghe of Oromia, Ethiopia

Abstract Background There is a need for the screening more effective, affordable and readily available antimicrobial substances from local medicinal plants or herbs as pathogenic bacteria are developing resistance to common antibiotics. Guava ( Psidium guajava L.) has activities it easily accessible populace in tropical region. Antimicrobial properties of guava extracts attributed presence different phytochemical constituents. The fact that phytochemicals’ constituents vary result geographical locations literatures about Ethiopian with respect composition content, hardly available, there analyze phytochemicals Oromia Regional State, Babile Gursum Districts against Salmonella Typhi , Shigella boydii, Staphylococcus aureus Enterococcus faecalis . Methods Extraction was done by maceration. Qualitative analysis carried out using standard protocol quantitative determination conducted spectrophotometric gravimetric methods. were determined disc diffusion broth dilution method. Results revealed alkaloids, saponin, steroids tannin, but absence flavonoid phlobatannin all leaf bark extracts. Gravimetric measurement showed highest terpenoid content 105.00 ± 8.66 mg extract/g powder extract. Similarly, total phenol 0.205 0.01 mg/g Tannic Acid Equivalent activity tests extract 13.0 6.79 mm zone inhibition boydii compared other lowest 2.375 0.177 mg/ml minimum inhibitory concentration while 1.875 0.884 MIC Typhi. Phytochemical saponins, tannins extracts, flavonoids phlobatannins terpenoids alkaloid (98.67 14.43, 93.33 8.82 powder, respectively) found respectively. higher clinical isolates than lower (13.0 mm) S. Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (1.250 0.001 mg/ml) Conclusion location could be source natural agents content. In vivo activity, isolation, identification synergy specific active compound responsible antibacterial should evaluated.
